What is Web Hosting?

If you have a website you want to put up on the Internet, you need to have the website 'hosted' by a computer that is permanently connected to the Internet and which is configured with the appropriate software. Web Hosting is the service that provides the requirements to run your website with all its bells and whistles on the Internet; it does not provide you with a connection to the Internet - for this you must go to an ISP (Internet Service Provider).

Why should I pick minihub's hosting service?

Not all hosting services are equal.
Look for the following things when choosing your hosting service:
Is it secure?
Is it reliable?
Can I get support and assistance?
What can I run on my website?
What restrictions are there on disk space and data traffic?
Are email accounts and mailing lists included in hosting service?
Is it good value for money?
Is there enough bandwidth to speedily handle all traffic in and out of my website?
Can I talk to a person at the hosting service?

minihub can answer 'yes' to the above questions where appropriate, providing a comprehensive range of hosting services with local support available through a number of channels. Our hosting service includes generous data, disk space and email account allowances, mailing lists and high security and reliability levels with experienced technicians and service staff on hand, all at extremely competitive rates. We also aim to be flexible and approachable, to help you achieve your goals through your domain.

What is a Domain Name?

A Domain Name is an Internet address that allows you or your business to maintain a continuous, static presence on the Internet. Examples of domain names are: yourname.com, yourname.net, yourname.org, yourname.com.au, etc.

Domain Names are uniquely allocated; once you register a domain name, you 'own' the name until such time as you allow the registration to expire or you cancel it. When the name is registered, it is put on a Domain Name Server (DNS) which enables lookup of your domain on the Internet. If you have a website hosted at your domain's address, people looking up your domain name on the internet will arrive at your website.

How do I register a Domain Name?

You need to apply with a Domain Name Registrar for the domain name that you want. If the name is not already allocated, you will be able to register it for a chosen period of time by paying a registration fee. The registration fee should be between $35-$43 per annum.

What is a Subdomain?

It is not always necessary to register a domain name in order to maintain a persistent web-presence. A subdomain is a static address created and administered within a domain; as such the name of a subdomain will always include the name of the parent domain. Hence minihub.org is a domain name, while orgx.minihub.org is a subdomain of minihub.org.

Minihub will provide subdomains to those members who find it a suitable solution. A subdomain account comes with all the features of the standard hosting account. Please contact minihub for further details.
